MudCats Roll over Stingrays

Tupelo, Miss. - The unbeaten Mississippi MudCats, who have not lost at home in their first two seasons, got seven touchdown passes from Tommy Jones and rolled to a 72-27 win Friday night against the Florida Stingrays.

The winless Stingrays quieted the crowd of 2,658 a couple of times, especially when they pulled to within 11 points, at 36-27, early in the third quarter. But the MudCats responded with their third and fourth interceptions of the night -quickly following one with a 46-yard scoring pass and firing up the crowd again when Jonathan George returned the other for a 28-yard TD.
It was the second interception of the night for George, who has four in two games.
In between those turnovers, the Stingrays handed the ball over once on downs and once on a fumble. What had been a close game turned into a 66-27 MudCats advantage.
"You saw the game," said Stingrays receiver Kendall Newson, who caught his team's first touchdown pass and made several other big plays. "We've got a lot to work on."
Teammate Chris Morant agreed: "We've just got to go back to the drawing board and find the things that work for us. A lot of things we did tonight ... they didn't work that well."
The home team put an exclamation point on late in the game by holding the Stingrays on four plays inside the MudCat 2-yard line, then Jones responded with a 48-yard flick of his wrist to favorite target Darryl Carter for the game's final touchdown.
The MudCats improved to 2-0 in the American Indoor Football Association. They are unbeaten in 11 games on their home turf at BancorpSouth Arena, dating to last season. Florida fell to 0-3.
The teams will play again this Saturday in Fort Myers.
The home team led 36-20 at halftime, as Jones connected on four scoring passes, three of them to Carter (26, 11 and 33 yards).
But for the second week in a row, the MudCats gave up a TD just before halftime. This one followed a failed onside kick attempt that put the Stingrays in business on the Mississippi 9.
The Stingrays scored on fourth down, on a pass from Antone Gadsden to Richard Washington.
Washington caught a 20-yarder from backup quarterback Ryan McCutcheon early in the third quarter to make it 36-27.
